A wrist ultrasound scan is a safe, painless examination that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the tendons, ligaments, joints, nerves and other soft tissues around the wrist. It can help investigate symptoms such as wrist pain, swelling, stiffness, reduced movement, a lump, or injuries caused by sport, work or everyday activities. During the examination, ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and a small handheld probe is moved over different areas of the wrist while you may be asked to move your hand or wrist in different directions. This dynamic assessment allows the sonographer to examine the wrist both at rest and during movement, helping to identify the cause of your symptoms. The scan is usually well tolerated, involves no radiation, and provides valuable information to help guide appropriate treatment or onward referral.
