An ankle ultrasound scan is a safe, painless examination that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the tendons, ligaments, muscles, joints and other soft tissues around the ankle. It can help investigate symptoms such as ankle pain, swelling, stiffness, reduced movement, instability, or injuries caused by sport, work or everyday activities. During the examination, ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and a small handheld probe is moved over different areas of the ankle while you may be asked to move your foot or ankle in different directions. This dynamic assessment allows the sonographer to examine the ankle both at rest and during movement, helping to identify the cause of your symptoms. The scan is usually well tolerated, involves no radiation, and provides valuable information to help guide appropriate treatment or onward referral.
