A foot ultrasound scan is a safe, painless examination that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the tendons, ligaments, joints, plantar fascia and other soft tissues within the foot. It can help investigate symptoms such as foot pain, swelling, stiffness, a lump, or injuries caused by sport, work or everyday activities. During the examination, ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and a small handheld probe is moved over different areas of the foot while you may be asked to move your foot or toes. This dynamic assessment allows the sonographer to examine the foot both at rest and during movement, helping to identify the cause of your symptoms. The scan is usually well tolerated, involves no radiation, and provides valuable information to help guide appropriate treatment or onward referral.
