A shoulder ultrasound scan is a safe, painless examination that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and other soft tissues around the shoulder. It can help investigate symptoms such as shoulder pain, weakness, stiffness, reduced movement, clicking, or injuries caused by sport, work or everyday activities. During the examination, ultrasound gel is applied to the skin and a small handheld probe is moved over different areas of the shoulder while you may be asked to perform simple arm movements. This dynamic assessment allows the sonographer to examine the shoulder both at rest and during movement, helping to identify the cause of your symptoms. The scan is usually well tolerated, involves no radiation, and provides valuable information to help guide appropriate treatment or onward referral.
